Welcome to a More Beautiful Web

That’s Microsoft’s new slogan to promote Internet Explorer 9. This could also be written as, “welcome to the Web everyone else has been seeing all along.”

I don’t have to support Internet Explorer when I build Web sites. That’s pretty nice. I don’t even have to support Firefox (mostly). When I’m interviewing prospective employees, their eyes light up at the prospect of writing to standards and not being limited to what IE 7 supports.

So on behalf of my peers out there who don’t have the luxury I do, allow me to get behind Microsoft on this campaign. Please, if you have to use Internet Explorer, upgrade.

And if you still use IE 6 (I’m looking at you, Asia), maybe it’s time to let go.

  1. I have IE6 on my machine at work because that’s what out software lists as a minimum. I use FireFox 10 as my preferred browser. (Seems like just the other day I was using Firefox 3.) Intuit’s own internal websites chirp at me for using such an old version of Explorer (pre Tabbed Browsing).

In the time it took me to write this comment, Firefox and automatically downloaded a newer version. Pardon me while I close and restart my browser.

    • I keep getting congratulated for updating my firefox to 3.6.something, then they say get all moody and say they can’t upgrade me to 10 because I’m on a pre-intel mac. It’s like a good cop/bad cop routine only with feelings instead of interrogation. Then it gives me a link to an explanation which doesn’t take me to an explanation at all, just a ad to upgrade to firefox 10. Talk about the right hand not knowing what the left hand is doing.
