Something to notice

You’ll hear nothing of my most magnificent trip to Yellowstone today. I’m going back and building something bigger. I’m going to try to step up and photograph the place well, and write something new.

In the meantime, I have added a link in over there to the right – Baghdad Burning. It is a very personal story of life in the ancient city by an articulate and passionate individual. Check it out.

Addendum: I’m coming up empty for the next poll. Any suggestions?

  1. No problem waiting for your Yellowstone entries. Any time you’re visiting some place on the “1000 places to see before you die” list, you ought to do it justice.

Interesting that of the 8 places in New Mexico on the list, I’ve done 7 — well, maybe 6 and a half, since you’re supposed to do Roswell during the UFO Festival. The one place I haven’t done is Ten Thousand Waves. Didn’t someone we know once work there?

Meanwhile, the place in the book I most want to visit is U Fleku.

  2. As for the poll question, doing something deeply political is out of character for this blog, and doing something else about where you go next is tired.

I’d recommend a poll about something like what the best color for a car is, and get creative about the names — none of this “sky blue” or “fire engine red.” More like “blue so vivid it sets off radar detectors” or “red that makes Chimayo chile seem cold.”

  3. U Fleku is ok (Too many noisy germans!), but we can show you better places when you get here. We can show you a bunch of places, and then you can decide yourself. Did Ceske Krumlov make the list?

  4. Places in the Czech Republic that made the list: Carlsbad, Cesky Krumlov, the Prague Castle District, the Charles Bridge, the Estates Theater, Old Town Square, and U Fleku. Of course, there are also some interesting things nearby in Hungary and Romania — Count Dracula’s Castle makes the list, for instance.

  5. Oh, yes, and what to see in Montana before you die: Big Sky, The Complete Fly Fisher, Glacier National Park, Triple Creek Ranch.

  6. I’ve just been waiting for someone to ask what are the places in New Mexico that you should see before you die. Since nobody’s asked, I’ll go ahead and list them: Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta, Route 66, Carlsbad Caverns National Park, Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad (my favorite), Roswell (UFO stuff), Inn of the Anasazi, Santa Fe Opera, and Ten Thousand Waves.
